about

This was part of the Beregovski project in which I've been looking at a folder of ethnomusicologist Moisei Beregovski's musical notes and "completing" them for cello ensemble. This project was commissioned by Prof. Anna Shternshis and the University of Toronto as a segment of the Yiddish Glory project.

This time I made variations on a pretty theme we found in Beregovski's folders. The title translates to "I planted vegetables in my little garden" (a mix of Yiddish and Russian transliterated into the Latin alphabet) and it was collected by Ida Shaykhes from Lerner Visnshaftler (could be a scientist or could just be their name?) in Kiev in 1946. Shaykes was one of very few woman ethnomusicologists associated with Beregovski, and was trained by him to continue his work.
Since Beregovski supposedly had the idea in mind that classical composers would create music based on these pieces of Jewish musical folklore, I tried to create some variations as if Brahms, Chopin, Fauré etc. were writing them. Then some are just plain old hokey classically inspired variations. There is definitely a quote of the Brahms piano quintet that I let happen, and it ends off basically turning into the Fauré Requiem.
Thank you Anna for the translations and info on Shaykhes!
