about
2 khosidls in a classical style 🎣
This was part of the Beregovski project in which I've been looking at a folder of ethnomusicologist Moisei Beregovski's musical notes and "completing" them for cello ensemble. This project was commissioned by Prof. Anna Shternshis and the University of Toronto as a segment of the Yiddish Glory project.
The first sketch is more or less a fisherman’s song, and I love its lyrics. They read (in Yiddish) “Catch, catch fish, from under the river, deep river. Come to me with your brothers. Little fish fill my belly.” (Words by Y. Shteynberg)
The music was written down for piano by 71 year-old Tovshteyn, who heard the folk tune in an Odessa synagogue in 1941 right before the area was invaded.
The second sketch, translated to “with a little accordion” (you’ll see I took a different approach) was arranged for SATB and piano by A.L. Levin.
I arranged from both sketches for cello septet, and added a little more klez-like transition. 7 Beths on 2 cellos playing 2 khosidls.
