about
This was part of the Beregovski project in which I've been looking at a folder of ethnomusicologist Moisei Beregovski's musical notes and "completing" them for cello ensemble. This project was commissioned by Prof. Anna Shternshis and the University of Toronto as a segment of the Yiddish Glory project.
Soon after the war, Beregovski received a letter from Yankev Sheynin, who collected a number of tunes: some during the war, others right before it in his native Belarus - all from amateur performers. He was hoping someone would get to perform these pieces on stage. Beregovsky shared that aspiration and wrote "of special interest" on Sheynin's letters. These pieces, collected by Sheynin, have been set into a cello duo, inspired by Bartók's violin duos, named after Sheynin.
